An inner world is not a secret code that makes every man predictable. It is the particular arrangement of hopes, fears, habits and responsibilities through which a person meets his life. Some parts are easy to recognise; others remain hidden even from the person living them. Understanding grows through attention, honest questions and the willingness to let new evidence change an old conclusion.

This book is written for men seeking language for their experience and for people who want to understand the men close to them. It does not ask you to excuse everything you discover. A difficult history may explain a response without making that response acceptable. A strong exterior may conceal uncertainty without proving that every silence contains profound feeling. The aim is to keep both the person and their responsibility visible.

The six chapters are sustained discussions of questions that arise in ordinary life. Documented historical and contemporary accounts appear where they illuminate those questions. Source numbers lead to notes at the back. Our interpretation is distinguished from what the accounts establish; we do not reconstruct unrecorded thoughts or private dialogue. Short fictional illustrations remain as practical teaching tools and are identified as such. A particular person's experience is not proof that everyone of a gender behaves alike. Read with two questions in mind: what can I reasonably establish about this person, and what choice is mine to make? The first keeps curiosity from becoming speculation. The second keeps understanding from becoming endless waiting for another person to change. If you are reading about yourself, replace the temptation to issue a verdict with the task of identifying a habit you can address.

Reflection exercises are gathered at chapter endings, followed by a workbook and practical resources. They are invitations to think and speak more clearly, not tests to impose on a partner. Use what fits your circumstances. Where there is coercion, intimidation, violence or fear for safety, prioritise protection and suitable support. Better wording is not a substitute for safety.
